Steven Awalt is a writer, film historian, filmmaker, and noted authority on the films of Steven Spielberg.
His first book, Steven Spielberg and Duel: The Making of a Film Career, on the making of Spielberg’s 1971 film, Duel, was released in hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield in March, 2014 and paperback in June, 2016. The book features new interviews with Steven Spielberg, the late author Richard Matheson and others about Matheson’s short story and script and the Spielberg film’s production and history.
Steven is working on a follow-up book about Steven Spielberg’s 1974 feature film, The Sugarland Express. The book includes brand-new and extensive interviews with actors Goldie Hawn, William Atherton and Michael Sacks, screenwriters Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins, director of photography Vilmos Zsigmond, and many more.
Steven appears in the retrospective documentary The Shark is Still Working on the Blu-ray edition of Jaws and will appear in the upcoming The Devil on Wheels, a documentary on Steven Spielberg’s 1971 film Duel.
With academic training in filmmaking and cinema history/theory, Steven studied production at Columbia College Chicago in the days when students still shot and cut on a pre-digital medium known as film. He holds an MA in cinema studies with a focus on film history from DePaul University, and is in his final year of studies for his MFA in film direction from the same institution.
